Percentages · Grade 6

In Percentages (Grade 6) you practise 4 skills: What a percentage is · A percentage of an amount · What percentage is it? · Discounts and price rises. A percent is another name for a hundredth: one percent is 1/100 of the whole, and the whole is 100%. Start with the easy percentages: 50% is a half, 25% is a quarter, 10% is a tenth, 20% is a fifth, and 1% is a hundredth.

To find a percentage of an amount, write the percentage as a fraction and divide: 20% of 80 is a fifth of 80, which is 16. You can also go through 10%: a tenth of 80 is 8, so 40% of 80 is 4 lots of 8, which is 32. To find what percentage a part is of a whole, write a fraction and expand or simplify it to a denominator of 100: 50 out of 200 is 50/200 = 25/100 = 25%. With a discount, take the amount of the discount away from the price; with a price rise, add it on. Each question has only one change: one discount or one rise.

Tip: A 25% discount on a price of 80 takes off a quarter of 80, which is 20, so you pay 60.

A percentage of an amount

Discounts and price rises

For example: A coat costs 210 shekels, and there is a 50% discount on it. How much do you pay after the discount?

Answer and solution

The answer: 105 shekels

The discount is part of the price: 50% = 1/2 210 ÷ 2 = 105 Then take it away from the price: 210 − 105 = 105 After the discount you pay 105 shekels.
